Navigating the Waves of Change: Insights from a Decade in Legal Technology
Article written by Rafi Shure, Chief Operating Officer at Aderant
The past decade has been marked by significant transformations and groundbreaking advancements in the legal industry’s ever-evolving landscape. As a more than ten-year industry veteran and technology executive, I witnessed firsthand the waves of change that reshaped the way we innovate, operate, and connect with clients. From the rise of cloud-based technologies and the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) to the shifting dynamics of firm operations, this period has been a journey of adaptation and growth.
Reflecting on the defining changes the industry witnessed over the past ten years, technology adoption stands foremost. Law firms were previously never viewed as early adopters and drivers of technological advancement. But, we have seen a significant shift in recent years, with firms pushing software-as-a-service (SaaS) to improve access to information, leverage AI capabilities, and enhance remote work experiences. As a result, we have seen the emergence of new C-level roles within firms, including Chief Innovation Officers, to help accelerate and navigate change.
We see this trend across our Aderant customer base, as evidenced by the growing number of firms transitioning from on-premise practice management system, Expert, to Expert Sierra, Aderant’s SaaS solution. Currently, Aderant has 215 Expert Sierra clients. This significant uptake validates Aderant’s commitment to providing a seamless process for law firms migrating to the cloud. For instance, Phi Finney McDonald, a global firm focused on complex and large-scale litigation implemented Expert Sierra to transform their financial operations and improve bill management, highlighting the strong traction and growing confidence in Aderant’s cloud-based solutions among its clients.
AI is revolutionizing the legal industry by automating routine tasks, enhancing efficiency, and enabling legal professionals to focus on more complex, strategic work. Law firms and corporate legal departments are increasingly integrating AI technologies into their operations, utilizing tools for document review, legal research, and contract analysis to improve accuracy and reduce costs. Law firms have been amongst the earliest adopters of AI to augment their business, drive productivity, and competitively equip attorneys to deliver better client outcomes. With these opportunities, AI also presents challenges, including accuracy and ethical considerations, which law firms must navigate to realize the transformative benefits AI offers.
Aderant is incorporating AI across its product portfolio to increase client efficiency and productivity across both the back- and front office. To this end, Aderant launched Stridyn, an AI-driven cloud platform that connects the Aderant product lines on one platform and to harness the full potential of AI. Stridyn enhances law firms’ user experiences and productivity by accelerating application interconnectivity and streamlining workflows. This platform also bolsters business intelligence across the organization and expands the capabilities of MADDI, Aderant’s fully trained, AI-powered virtual associate. MADDI is more than just a chatbot. It transforms operations by automating repetitive tasks across the firm. For example, MADDI is the driving force behind Onyx, the groundbreaking solution that fully automates and unifies outside counsel guidelines (OCG) compliance across time, billing, and eBilling.
AI is accelerating how law firms automate complex tasks, uncover actionable insights, and make strategic decisions. However, it will become increasing important for firms to understand the risks and how technology partners are prepared to combat them. AI must be built with a human-centric approach that empowers legal professionals because they are the driving force at the heart of every law firm. At Aderant, our data strategy emphasizes rigorous quality management, including automated checks, masking, anonymization, and filtering, ensuring data is secure and compliant.
Beyond technology, the importance of the work-to-cash process in meeting firms’ client demands cannot be overstated in the face of evolving market demands. This end-to-end process encompasses everything from contract creation to the final payment collection and ensuring that firms can efficiently manage revenue cycles and maintain healthy cash flow is crucial. With software, firms can reduce the time it takes to convert contracts into revenue and cash. Efficient work-to-cash processes also enable firms to better manage client relationships, eliminate billing errors, and enhance overall client satisfaction. As market demands evolve, firms that can adapt their work-to-cash processes to be more agile and responsive will be better positioned to meet client expectations and maintain a competitive edge.
Over the past decade, Aderant has successfully accelerated the work-to-cash process by providing a comprehensive suite of solutions designed to optimize every revenue cycle stage. Aderant’s solution suite, including BillBlast, iTimekeep, and Onyx, automate and streamline billing operations, ensuring compliance and reducing manual work. BillBlast, for instance, centralizes eBilling across multiple vendor platforms, enabling efficient bill preparation and submission that adheres to client requirements. This end-to-end bill management solution accelerates collections and reduces fee deductions, ultimately speeding up the conversion of work to cash. MADDI plays a crucial role in automating repetitive tasks and providing actionable insights to optimize complex activities throughout the firm. Leveraging MADDI’s capabilities ensures compliance by identifying, notifying, enforcing, and improving rules, which helps minimize reductions and delays, thereby maximizing compensation. With this advanced technology, Aderant enables law firms to manage their revenue cycles more efficiently, improve financial stability, and enhance overall client satisfaction.
As we look back on the past decade, it’s clear that the industry has undergone profound changes that have redefined our approach to business and innovation. The lessons learned from this period of transformation are invaluable, providing a roadmap for navigating future challenges and opportunities. Embracing change, staying adaptable, driving efficiency, and continuously seeking new ways to manage complexity will be vital as we move forward. By reflecting on the past and applying these insights going forward, we can confidently shape the future of legal and continue to thrive in an ever-evolving landscape.
