Aderant was founded in 1978 in Tallahassee, Florida, as Custom Management Systems, Inc. (CMS). The company quickly introduced a time and billing application to law firms throughout the American Southeast. In 1995, the company introduced CMS OPEN, the legal industry's first fully-customizable practice management system designed to run on the Microsoft Windows operating system.

Over the next several years, the company grew its presence throughout North America and expanded into the United Kingdom and Australia. In 1999, the company was acquired by Australian-based Solution 6 (now MYOB). In 2004 part of the Solution 6 entity was spun off and acquired by Francisco Partners, a leading global technology-focused private equity firm with more than $5 billion in assets under management. A new corporate entity, Aderant, was formed from the acquisition.

In November 2008 Aderant was acquired by Vista Equity Partners, a private equity firm with more than $2 billion in committed capital that invests in private and public software and technology-enabled companies, focusing on successful organizations committed to maintaining industry leadership.
